Utah Day #15 - Last Day

My last day in Utah. I fly home tomorrow out of Salt Lake. I am doing one last hike in Devil's Garden in Arches. It is about a 7 mile hike round trip to Double O Arch.

Utah Day #14 - Double Arch

Two weeks officially! The trip is nearing the end and there are only a few more stops. In these last few days I am hoping to catch a night with NO clouds to do a collection of star trail pictures. In particular I am hoping to get a star trail shot of Double Arch.

Utah Day #13 - Landscape Arch

We didn't actually make it to Delicate Arch last night, instead we watched the sunset up in Canyonlands. We are going to head to Delicate Arch in the evening today. This morning, though, we are going to check out Landscape Arch which is falling apart and won't be around much longer -- geologically speaking.

Utah Day #12 - Delicate Arch

Interesting day planned for today. We will be doing 1 or 2 short hikes in arches in the morning and then napping before hiking up to Delicate Arch before sunset. Our plan is to stick around Delicate until the stars come out and then head to Balanced Rock for some more night pics.

Delicate Arch is probably the most famous arch in the world. It is on the Utah licence plate and is just a wonderfully crafted and shaped arch.

Utah Day #11 - The White Rim Road

Today we are heading into Canyonlands to see Mesa Arch and the White Rim Road. More bumpy dirt roads will be tiring but well worth it for views like these...

Utah Day #10 - Potash and Long Canyon Road

Today we rented a 4-wheel-drive two-door Rubicon and are spending two days off-roading. I would have been more nervous about this had I not changed a flat tire two days ago.

We haven't settled on a route yet, but we are likely to head down Long Canyon near Dead Horse Point. There is a neat portion where you drive under a leaning rock.

Utah Day #9 - Fiery Furnace

Today we are taking a tour through the Fiery Furnace in Arches National Park. All of these photos come from this website.

Utah Day #8 - Bryce to Moab

Today we are hiking in Bryce and heading to Moab, UT. Moab lies between Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. We are setting up here for the rest of the trip.

Utah Day #7 - Bryce Canyon

After an early wake up in Page, AZ my mother and I are driving to Bryce Canyon National Park. We are only here one night so we are going to have to hike fast! Bryce is like the surface of another planet. It is filled with hoodoos--spires formed from wind and water erosion. Erosion has sculpted this valley into an amazing maze of rock and canyon. We are spending the night in Bryce and hiking here tomorrow before heading to Moab.

Utah Day #6 - Antelope Canyon

Very busy day! My mother arrives to join me for the trip, but first I have a photography tour of Antelope Canyon. I headed west to photograph some slot canyons and this is THE SPOT to visit. There are millions of amazing photos from this canyon and I am hoping to add my own to the collection soon.

These shots come from Greg Disch's blog. It was the only one where I found shots of the entrance to the canyon.

Here is the entrance to one of the canyons!

Utah Day #5 - Driving to Page, AZ

After a shorter hike in Zion, I am driving to Page, Arizona. I am heading there for two reasons. The first is to see the Grand Canyon, one of the 7 natural wonders of the world. I am headed to a particular part of the southern rim (it's technically the east at this location) called The Horseshoe. Here are some great shots people have taken:

As you can see this was taken by Phillip Colla who has a great website detailing some of the classic places to photograph in Utah and Arizona. Check it out.

I couldn't find the name of the author of this. He is listed as Shayamal1980 on this website.

Utah Day #4 - Observation Point

Today is the longest hike of the trip. I am hiking from the base of Zion Valley to an overlook.

This one comes from Joe's Guide again: http://www.citrusmilo.com/zionguide/

Utah Day #3 - Angel's Landing

Today's hike is Angel's Landing in Zion National Park. This is one of the most well known hikes in the world, but is a bit scary. You hike up this narrow set of switch backs then out onto this VERY narrow plateau.

All of these photos come from Joe Braun's website. Click here. An indispensable site for planning a trip to Zion. The photo galleries make choosing a hike so easy!

A view of Angel's Landing from near the trailhead

Here are the switchbacks called the wiggles.

Angel's Landing is visible in the distance. You can see the narrow ridge you must traverse.

Scary!

The reward!

Utah Day #2 - The Narrows

Today's hike is the The Narrows...

The Virgin River carved Zion valley over millions of years. As you hike north through the park, the valley narrows until it is only as wide as the river itself. You can continue hiking in the river itself. It's tricky for a few reasons but is one of the most rewarding hikes in the world, not to mention a nice way to stay cool in the 100 degree heat!

Thanks to Joe for his amazing resource for Zion National Park: http://www.citrusmilo.com/zionguide/

Utah Day #1 - Flying to Salt Lake

Today I began a trip to photograph and hike for two weeks in Southern Utah. Instead of posting my own photos while I am travelling. I wanted to show some photos of the locations I expect to explore each day.

If you would like to see unedited photos from the trip while I am on the road, I will be posting them here: http://utah12.blogspot.com/. When I return home I am going to edit the photos and post them at a later date.

Here is a shot of Springdale, UT. Springdale is where I will be staying just outside of Zion National park.

I found this photo here. The article was written my Megabeth.

Famous Post #15 - Zhao Huasen

Here are some amazing photos taken by Zhao Huasen, found here. They are of Chinese commuters with their bikes photoshopped out. The best part is that he leaves the shadows in.
